Domus de Janas Perdepera - Hiking tour

Immersed among the fragrances of Mediterranean scrub and the striking red rocks at the foot of Monte Arista, in the territory of Cardedu, lies Domus de Janas Perdepera, one of Sardinia’s most fascinating prehistoric sites. The path leading to it is an easy, two-hour hike — a short yet moving journey where nature and archaeology intertwine in perfect harmony.

Carved into trachyte rock, the hypogean tomb of Perdepera holds more than five thousand years of history. Dating back to the Late Neolithic, it belongs to the same Domus de Janas tradition — mythical “houses of the fairies” where myth and history blend. According to legend, these were homes of tiny luminous beings who brought prosperity to those who respected the land; in truth, they were sacred burial sites, signs of a people who understood stone as a living substance.

The trail winds through dense, aromatic vegetation of rockrose, lentisk, and myrtle, accompanied by birdsong and the quiet of the landscape. Reaching the Domus de Janas Perdepera feels like a journey back in time, into authentic Ogliastra — a land where nature, myth, and memory merge into a single, continuous emotion.
